Customizing BI Dashboards and Scoreboards

Most users of White Cup BI will either have a Dashboard or Scorecard as their landing page or they'll end up using one or more of them on a regular basis.  While we've included many pre-configured dashboards and scorecards, your users will want to be able to modify existing dashboards or create new ones on their own.

Dashboards vs Scorecards

While they are similar, there is an important difference between dashboards and scorecards.  A dashboard is an overall view of a topic while a scorecard is limited to a specific identifier.  A dashboard is never prompted whereas a scorecard usually is.  View examples on the New Dashboard article.

For the rest of this article, we'll use dashboard to mean both scorecards and dashboards, except where specifically noted.

Modifying a Dashboard

Permissions

Before a user can modify the dashboard, they must first have permission to write to at least one Library. Go to the user management section of the Admin tab to see how this works. Open the Dashboard Library section of a user (or a Template).

They need permission for at least one place to Write to in order to save their modified dashboards. If we give them write access to the same Library where the dashboard is located, they'll be able to override the original dashboard. This might be what you want, but for the standard content that comes with White Cup BI, we suggest leaving those libraries read-only and create a new library that users can write to.

New libraries can be created in the Manage Library section by going to Dashboard Libraries and clicking on the “Add new library” link.

Visual Editor

With permissions, users with access can now make edits.

If additional permissions have been enabled, Manual Edit allows you to make changes to the dashboard using HTML and MWML (Mits Web Markup Language). This is generally a task reserved for advanced users and beyond the scope of this article. If you're interested in learning more about MWML, view this article or contact Support.

Change Prompting

Change Prompting in the Edit mode allows you to change the identifier that a scorecard is based on. In this case, we're looking at a dashboard so there is no prompting.  It would have to be changed to a Scorecard first (or modify a Scorecard).

Change a Dashboard into a Scorecard

You can change this dashboard into a scorecard by adding a prompt here. White Cup BI will then prompt that user when opening the scorecard and insert the prompt at the top of the drilldown path for all of the objects in the dashboard.  If the drilldown path doesn't exist, that will break the object.

PDF Page Size

The PDF page size allows you to control the size of the PDF export in pixels. If you have a dashboard that's a little too large to fit on a single page when exporting to PDF, you can use this feature to adjust the sizing. It'll take a little trial and error to get just right.

View Dashboard

The View Dashboard tab takes you back to the standard viewing mode. If you’ve made any changes, you'll be prompted to save those changes prior to switching modes.

Under the title are customization options for:

-Horizontal Line adds a new divider you can use to visually separate objects. Like all new objects, it gets added to the upper left corner. Hover over the line and then click and drag it to its new location.

-Section adds a new container for grouping related objects. It has a title bar that you can edit. You can drag objects into the section just like you would the horizontal line. While in visual mode, all objects are eligible for drag-and-drop.

-Dashboard Object allows you to create new objects for the dashboard. Read below for more information.

Create a New Dashboard Object

Many new dashboard objects can be created from here using the Dashboard Object button.  Read more on the Objects article about how to add the different types of objects that can be created.

Modify an Object

For objects on our dashboard, we can modify it by clicking the gear icon on the upper right-hand corner.

From the Modify Grid window, you can add or remove columns, adjust the number of rows returned, add query statements to pull more specific data, or add a report link.
