Purpose
The purpose of this technical bulletin is to explain the purpose of the Quick Grid option available in the Grid Preferences menu.
The Quick Grid feature is used to speed up the load times of grids, and is a user preference that is enabled in the Grid Preferences menu.
This technical bulletin contains the following sections:
- Overview of the Quick Grid Feature
- Enabling Quick Grid Mode
- Best Practices for Using Quick Grids
Note: Read the documentation completely before using the Quick Grid feature.
- Overview of the Quick Grid Feature
A new feature related to the grids in Tour de Force is the Quick Grid option. When a user creates a view in Tour de Force, that view normally does not contain all of the columns that could possibly be added into that view. Normally users do not need to see all of the available columns, and in general are only looking at a select column to locate the record or item they need to view.
In previous versions of Tour de Force, all fields and columns load into the grid regardless of whether they are in use in that view or not. By loading in every available column into the view, this allowed for users to open the column chooser and load in a new column instantly. While this is convenient it also causes grids to load much slower. For views that only display 10 or fewer columns, there is generally no reason to be loading in the rest of the columns. The Quick Grid feature is used to make it so that the views only load the columns and fields that those views were designed to load. For views that contained a few columns having the Quick Grid feature enabled could significantly speed up the load times of those views and grids.
- How to Enable Quick Grid Mode
The Quick Grid option is a toggable feature that can be turned on and off by any normal user of Tour de Force, and only applies to their local machine.
When Quick Grid is turned on it gets enabled on every grid that can use Quick Grid mode.
Use the following procedures to enable the Quick Grid option in a grid in Tour de Force:
- Click the Manager’s Console icon on the Tour de Force toolbar.
- Choose a grid to enable the Quick Grid feature on.
For example, select the Account tab to enable open the Accounts grid.
- Click the Grid Preferences button.
- Select the Toggle Quick Grid Mode option.
After the Toggle Quick Grid Mode option has been checked, either click the refresh button or close and reopen the grid to apply the settings. With the Quick Grid option enabled only the fields that are expected to be in that view are going to load in the grid and, in most cases, significantly decrease the loading time of the grid.
In order to disable Quick Grid mode, simply uncheck the option in the Grid Preferences and then refresh or reload the grid.
- Best Practices for Using Quick Grids
The Quick Grid feature is a unique feature that can be used by users that are having issues with loading in views that contain a large amount of data. However, there are a couple of things about the Quick Grid that need to be noted before turning on the Quick Grids.
- When Quick Grid is enabled, any new column added is not going to load into the grid instantly
When Quick Grid is enabled, the only fields and columns that are being loaded into the grid are the columns that were originally saved for that view. This means that any new column added into that view is not going to load into the grid instantly. The load time for that new column is going to be dependent upon how many records or items are currently loaded into the view and the grid.
- Quick Grid mode is grid based and not view based, and gets applied to all grids
The Quick Grid feature is enabled in the Grid Preferences menu that is located at the bottom of every grid in Tour de Force. When a Grid Preference is changed, the change gets applied to all grid types available in Tour de Force. Disabling Quick Grid and then saving the view does not apply that change to that view specifically. If Quick Grid mode is enabled in the Grid Preferences menu, the mode gets enabled on any grid that can use Quick Grid mode.
- Quick Grids are not a global setting and only get applied to the user’s personal computer
When a user enables Quick Grid mode, the feature does not get enabled for all users of Tour de Force. Whether a user can enable or disable Quick Grid is not based on any user permissions and does not require Global Grid Admin rights.
- Quick Grids do not get applied to grids in Tour de Force Mobile
