The Column Sorting configuration tool is used to establish the sorting preferences for your report. You can specify which columns you want the report sorted by and the sort order. You can also specify the order of the sort actions if sorting on more than one column has been specified.
Only columns that have been configured with Enhanced Column Capabilities within the Report Source can be used for sorting. See the section above for instructions on enabling this feature.
A report can be sorted from within the Column Sorting configuration tool or by using one of the sorting options in the column menu of the report.
Column Sorting is automatically applied when using the Break on Column feature. All previously applied sorting will be removed when a column break is added to the report.
Sort a Report from the Column Sorting Configuration Page
To sort the current report on a column from within the Column Sorting configuration tool, drag the desired column from the Available Columns to Sort list to the Current Sorted Columns list, select ascending or descending from the drop-down menu that appears in the Current Sorted Columns list, and click View Report. You can also double-click on an item in the Available Columns to Sort list to move it to the Current Sorted Columns list.
To add a secondary sort, repeat the process to add a second column to the Current Sorted Columns list. The sorting order of precedence is displayed directly under the column heading using small “column state” icons when viewing the report.
To remove all sorting from the report, click the Remove All Sorting for this Report link at the bottom of the Column Sorting configuration tool.
Sort a Report from the Column Menu
The column menu (which can be accessed by clicking on any column heading within a report) includes two sorting options: Sort Ascending and Sort Descending.
Only one level of sorting can be added using this method. To add additional levels of sorting to your report, use the Column Sorting configuration tool (which can be accessed from the Modify menu in the tool bar of any report) as described above.
Modify the Sorting Direction
There are three ways to modify the sorting direction of a column being used to sort a report.
- From within the Column Sorting configuration tool, select ascending or descending from the drop-down menu in the Current Sorted Columns list and click View Report.
- In the column menu of the report, select the available sorting option (Sort Ascending or Sort Descending).
- Click on the small column sorting icon in the column heading of the report, as pictured to the right.
Modify the Sorting Order of Precedence
The Sorting Order of Precedence is the order in which sorting will be applied to the report if more than one column sort has been specified. This can only be modified from within the Column Sorting configuration tool, available from the Modify menu of any report.
To modify the sorting order of precedence, reorder the columns that appear in the Current Sorted Columns list on the Column Sorting configuration tool by dragging them up or down in the list as needed. The top column sort in that list will be applied first. Each next column in the list will further refine the sort.
Remove All Sorting from a Report
To remove all sorting from the report, navigate to the Column Sorting configuration tool and click the Remove All Sorting for this Report link at the bottom of the page.
